5 big myths that are holding you back from success as a graphic designer

Now, more than ever, is the best time to become a brand and web designer. If you want the ability to work from anywhere with your dream clients, and literally get paid for being creative, it’s the perfect job for you. However, when you’re debating switching careers, it’s easy to fall into imposter syndrome, and feel like you might fail. Your mindset plays a huge role in your career growth - don’t let these common myths stop you from reaching for your goals. Today we’re walking through the most common myths that are holding you back from success as a graphic designer.

Myth #1: You have to go to design school to be a successful designer.

Have you ever wondered if it’s too late to switch careers because you don’t have a degree in design? While formal design education can be a valuable experience, it’s a choice that does not always make sense for your career, time restraints, or bank account. In fact, there are many successful graphic designers who are self-taught (myself included!). If you feel like your design knowledge is lacking, research free resources such as YouTube to help, paid resources like Skillshare, or invest in a designer training course.

Myth #2: You need to learn how to code.

If learning how to code leaves you feeling overwhelmed, then listen up! To make it simple, you do NOT need to know how to code in order to be a successful web designer. There are tons of web design platforms that require zero coding knowledge, and you always have the option of collaborating with a developer. Don’t let others discourage you from becoming a successful designer because you’re not an expert in coding.

Myth #3: You need a huge following to be able to get clients.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: you don’t have thousands of followers on Instagram or a massive email list. There’s this myth floating around the online space that you need a huge following with a giant email list of warm leads to be able to book clients. But that’s not the case. It’s not about how many followers, it’s about the quality of your audience, and the connection you build with them. Build trust with your audience by regularly engaging with people who could be potential clients.

Myth #4: Adding more time or deliverables is the only way to raise your rates.

Mindset shift time! Step away from a deliverables-based pricing model and create a value-based pricing model. You can still provide an estimate of your deliverables, but it’s important to emphasize the value your clients are receiving when they work with you.

Myth #5: You have to do it all yourself.

This is the biggest myth of them all! Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s actually a sign of strength that shows you are taking your business seriously and looking to scale. You do NOT have to do it all yourself! If you are overwhelmed by your current workload, look into hiring an intern or a contractor to help take some tasks off your plate so you can focus on the areas of your business that you love.

Whoo! Those were some big myths we just debunked! Do you feel like a weight has been lifted off of your shoulders? That’s because limiting beliefs can have a negative impact on your life by stopping you from moving forward.

But it’s also important to remember that you can’t let those thoughts hold you back from success. You are meant to become a successful business owner.
