Overcoming imposter syndrome to live a fulfilling life you deserve

Your dream entrepreneurial life is within your grasp, don’t let the opinions of others stop you from achieving it. Today’s MoneyMak(her) interview sits down to chat with Meha Agrawal, founder of self-care monthly planner and journal subscription service Silk & Sonder, about how she transitioned from software engineer to wildly successful female entrepreneur.

1. How did you get started in your industry? What led to your passion for your career?

Before starting Silk + Sonder, I was a software engineer and product manager. I had a great life but woke up anxious, stressed and under-fulfilled. I realized that I wasn’t prioritizing my values, my dreams, and my emotional health - I wanted to build a mental wellness experience that felt more personalized, accessible, and actionable for women and their communities, worldwide.

2. What were some of the bigger challenges you experienced in getting started?

Getting started was easy for me but deciding to quit my stable job to go full time was a much bigger, daunting decision. Everyone warned me of the financial risk of becoming an entrepreneur, but no one told me that the emotional risk far outweighed the financial one. Once I began to stop listening to others’ opinions and focus on what brought me joy, the challenge around commitment became much easier.

3. How has your life changed now that you’re pursuing your passion and living your dream?

While life isn’t all that much more glamorous being a Founder and CEO, I wake up more energized. Every day presents a new problem, but I care so deeply about our mission that the lows and highs all feel worth it. As founders, we are lifelong builders and problem-solvers - when you attach that to a personal purpose or calling, every day becomes an opportunity versus a chore.

4. What’s your favorite part about owning your own business/your career?

I get to work my own hours, hire the best team, and own the product roadmap - it feels liberating, challenging, and rewarding. Also, I get to meet awesome people every day - from our customers to candidates we’re interviewing to our employees, investors, advisors, and partners.

5. What does supporting women-owned businesses look like to you?

Supporting women-owned businesses means rolling up your sleeves and getting into the weeds of a problem they’re facing, amplifying their voices by showcasing them on our blog and newsletter, and ultimately providing access to capital and resources, if and when they need it. We all need support in different ways and the only way to overcome Imposter Syndrome is to remind women that they are capable of anything they set their mind to - and cheer them on through the ups and downs.

6. How has your brand/packaging/website changed or improved your business?

It’s more consistent, recognizable, and loved! We’re excited to continue to make improvements with the new branding recommendations as we continue to grow and expand our product lines.
